Oakland cop Robert’s days linger with memories of his Vietnamese ex-wife Suzy who left him two years ago. Now Suzy has disappeared and Sonny, her Vietnamese husband, blackmails Robert into finding her. Robert treads into Sonny’s unsavory Las Vegas world searching for Suzy and, while dealing with the danger of this pursuit, he also uncovers more about Suzi’s past — a daughter he did not know about and her time in a refugee camp after the fall of Saigon — than he ever knew during their marriage.
The novel reads like a well-composed piece of classical music and, at the moments when we read Suzi’s letters, we are also a witness to her poignant, heart-wrenching story. Dragonfish by Vu Tran is a hauntingly beautiful novel of love and loss that stays with you long after the final page is turned.
